Children & Young People’s Services

Play & Art Therapy & Trauma Support

Children and young people can be deeply affected by road traffic collisions, whether they have been injured themselves, witnessed a collision, lost a loved one, or are living with the ongoing impact that road trauma can have on their family. Unlike adults, children often struggle to express their thoughts and emotions through words alone. As a result, feelings of fear, anxiety, grief, confusion, anger, or trauma can sometimes emerge through changes in behaviour, difficulties at school, sleep disturbances, withdrawal from activities, or challenges in relationships.

At The Road Ahead NI, we provide specialist, trauma-informed support tailored to the individual needs of each child or young person. Our service begins with an assessment to help us understand the child's experiences, strengths, and support needs. From there, children may access a range of therapeutic interventions including play therapy, art therapy, trauma counselling, and other creative approaches designed to help them process difficult experiences in a safe and age-appropriate way.

Play and creative expression are often a child's natural language. Through carefully structured therapeutic activities, children can explore and communicate thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words, helping them make sense of what has happened and reducing the emotional burden they may be carrying. Early trauma-informed intervention can play a vital role in supporting emotional wellbeing, building resilience, improving coping skills, strengthening self-esteem, and preventing difficulties from becoming more entrenched over time.

Our aim is to help children and young people feel safe, heard, and understood while supporting their emotional recovery and healthy development. By providing the right support at the right time, we can help children build confidence, develop positive coping strategies, strengthen resilience, and move forward with hope following the impact of road trauma.

No child should have to navigate the effects of road trauma alone. At The Road Ahead NI, we are committed to ensuring that children and young people receive the specialist support they need to heal, grow, and thrive.
