WHO ARE WE?

The Road Ahead NI (Charity No. 110220) is a registered charity dedicated to supporting individuals, families, and communities across Northern Ireland who road traffic collisions have impacted.

Founded in 2020 as a service under the Road Safe NI charity, The Road Ahead NI was created in direct response to the devastating effects road crashes have on lives throughout the region. All of our volunteers have been affected in some way by a road crash.

Recognising the urgent and growing need for specialised support, The Road Ahead NI has since evolved into a charity in its own right. We continue to work closely with Road Safe NI — first to educate and help save lives, and when that is not possible, to support individuals and families in the aftermath of a road crash.

Our mission is clear: to provide tailored, compassionate services to everyone affected by road collisions, including bereaved families and friends, survivors adjusting to life-changing injuries, witnesses, and first responders.

MISSION STATEMENT

At The Road Ahead NI, we believe no one should face this journey alone. We provide compassionate, personalised support to individuals, families, and communities affected by road traffic collisions across Northern Ireland. Through peer mentoring, trauma counselling, support groups, and therapeutic services, we stand with those coping with grief, injury, and loss—offering hope, healing, and connection at every step.

WHAT DO WE DO?

Initially serving individuals within the Newry, Mourne and Down District, The Road Ahead NI has experienced a significant increase in demand for our services across Northern Ireland. Today, we receive referrals from GPs, social workers, community mental health teams, paediatric professionals, voluntary organisations, and through self-referrals, many of whom have nowhere else to turn for immediate, trauma-specific support.

Our work bridges a critical gap in care, particularly for those who face long NHS waiting lists or services not suited to the unique trauma associated with road traffic incidents.

Our dedicated team of volunteers, supported by self-employed trauma specialists, delivers a range of essential services, including:

  • Peer Mentoring Support

  • Trauma Counselling and Play Therapy

  • Referral and Signposting Services

  • Monthly Support Groups

  • Therapeutic Workshops

We also organise annual memorial events, family days, and therapeutic group sessions, helping to foster connection, resilience, and healing among those with shared experiences.

At The Road Ahead NI, we are committed to walking alongside every person affected by road trauma, offering not just support but hope for the journey ahead.  All of our services are free.  We believe no one should travel this journey alone.
